The Fens is an area located in the East of England, south of The Wash. The Fens spread over several counties, including Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Lincolnshire and Rutland. The area from Boston and Spalding in the North, then South to Wisbech and Ely and back to the Wash at Kings Lynn, are recognised to be the Fens. The total area comprising some 400 square miles of land which lies between 0 and 25 feet above mean sea level (MSL), and the greatest majority of this no more than 12 feet above MSL. Since the Fens were drained the peat areas have shrunk enormously. On average the land is 20 feet lower than it was when the Romans farmed it.
