Moulton
The main village of this extensive Fenland parish is an oasis of treelined roads and parkland, just off the A151 Spalding to Holbeach road. Moulton mill, which is currently undergoing a massive restoration project, is one of the best known historic buildings in Lincolnshire. By the time phase two of the restoration project is completed, in Spring 2005, visitors will be able to learn of the mill’s history through an interpretation area. There will also be a café on site and the mill is being designed to cater for the disabled. The All Saints church has a magnificent crocketed Perpendicular spire with flying buttresses, and a long nave with twelfth-century arcades and Early English clerestory. Adjacent to the church are a collection of village stores together with the a public house. At one time Moulton could boast of a castle and, until the pupils were transferred to Spading, a grammar school. There are some find buildings, including town-style houses along High street, such as Harrox House, Boyfield and Mill House. On the other side of the a151 down a narrow lane is the Elloe Stone. This is believed to have been used to mark the site of the moot of Elloe wapentake in Danish times. |
